What happens to a statement
Footing reads your statements to make your ledger, and keeps none of them. This page says exactly what happens to a file from the moment you add it.
In your browser
The file is opened in your browser, split into pages, and a small picture of each page is drawn for you to look at. The whole file never leaves your computer or phone in one piece.
On our server
Each page is sent on its own over an encrypted connection. Our server holds it in memory while it is read, which takes seconds, then lets it go. It is never written to disk or to a database, and it is not in our logs: they record that a page was read, how long it took and what it cost, never what was on it.
The figures read from each page come back to your browser. The ledger, the checks and any corrections you make happen there. When you download the workbook, your browser sends the figures (not the files) to our server, which writes the workbook in memory and sends it straight back. Nothing is kept.
Leave or reload the page and your statements, figures and corrections are gone from it too, so download the workbook first.
Who else sees a page
The reading is done by a language model from Anthropic, through its service for businesses. Under its terms, Anthropic does not train its models on what is sent this way, and it deletes each page and its reading from its systems within 30 days. It keeps them longer only if its automated safety checks flag a misuse of the service, or if the law requires it.
What we do keep
To share the free pages fairly (15 a day and 30 a month for each person), Footing counts the pages read by each visitor. Your browser is given a random number in a cookie, and the count is kept against a scrambled form of that number and of your network address, which cannot be turned back into either. The counts are deleted after two months. There is no account, no tracking across other sites, and no advertising.
The sample statements
The three sample statements are made up. The banks, the people and the figures do not exist.
